Surprise Rotarians honor Arizona Charter Academy

Club gives teachers thank you cards, carnations

Posted

On the morning of Nov. 24 the Rotary Club of Surprise, a member of District 5495, showed its appreciation to more than 100 teachers and staff members of Arizona Charter Academy for their hard work, dedication and perseverance during the last nine challenging months of the COVID-19 pandemic by bringing each of them individualized “Thank You” cards and fresh carnations.

The idea was initiated by discussions with the student-led Rotary Interact Club at ACA and Club Advisor Jeri Robertson about how the teachers were performing so admirably under such difficult and strenuous circumstances created by the pandemic.

Club President Oscar Silva, Service Projects Chair Amanda Sanchez and member Jay Lickus met in a safe and socially distant manner in the lobby of ACA to present the cards and flowers to ACA President and CEO Melissa Holdaway, Interact Club President Maya Delgado and teacher and Ms. Robertson.

The undertakings of the Surprise Rotary Club were part of the Rotary International proclaimed “Gratefulness Week.”

“We have an amazing relationship with everyone at Arizona Charter Academy and we are very proud of the work our Interact students have been performing during these trying times,” Mr. Silva said. “ACA is a terrific resource in our community.”

The Rotary Club of Surprise supports many activities at ACA and have been active volunteers on the campus. Recently, the club matched $500 raised by Interact students for their Holiday “Penny Wars” fundraiser netting $1000 for the drive.

In October, the club hosted a Shred-A-Thon on the ACA campus which raised $500 for the Interact Club as well.

The personalized cards were designed and printed by Rotary Club member Kevin Moore, owner of Moore graphics in Youngtown.

The Rotary Club of Surprise is part of Rotary International, a service organization with the motto “Service Above Self.” The primary mission of Rotary is the eradication of polio worldwide.

The middle school student version of Rotary is known as Interact. The club focuses on learning about community service and teaching members leadership, ethics and personal growth skills. ACA has had an Interact Club on campus for several years.

“What a blessed bunch we are that there are such amazing people in our community that do care about us as employees, and care about our students too,” Ms. Robertson said.
