Sonnie Wolf

Posted
“Sonnie” (don’t call me “Sondra”) Wolf, 87, died May 1, 2022, in Sun City, AZ in her desired location -- at home -- under the care of Devine Hospice. Sonnie, born in Brooklyn, July 11, 1934, was also raised in Brooklyn where she enjoyed Broadcast Radio's Golden era, films of the classic studio system, and early television. A lifelong knitter, Sonnie learned the craft while in elementary school and contributed winter scarves to the U.S. military serving in WW II. She never lost her passion for knitting. Decades later, as a retired Sun City resident, she donated her time knitting caps and scarves for needy AZ migrant workers. After graduating high school, Sonnie took a secretarial position in NYC where she met and married Ascher Wolf in 1953. Together they shared loads of laughter and 45 years of wedded partnership until his death in 1999. In 1964, Sonnie began her journey West from her NYC roots, at first following her husband's work postings, beginning with the Nebraska prairie. She continued West residing in Kansas, Colorado, and Nevada before living out her days in Arizona. As an empty nester in her late 40s, Sonnie trained for and embarked on a new career as a Certified Travel Counselor. Her love of travel, especially cruise ship voyages, was evident: In addition to dozens of islands, she traveled every continent except Antarctica. Sonnie was also the mother of four biological children: Ken Wolf, Lori Wolf, Bob Wolf (1956-1995), and Valerie Wolf. Her two granddaughters, Linden Wolf and Kathryn Wolf, blessed Sonnie with three great-grand children. She also served as a bonus mom to her beloved niece, Sherrie Good and nephew, by marriage, Gary Dolinka, as well as many others who were fortunate enough to be in her life. Her enduring friendship, spanning over 40 years, with Elizabeth "Dolly" Mahoney, also of Sun City, holds sister status. A Sun City resident since 2003, she was a competitive Mahjong player and active in various Sun City Mahjong clubs. A voracious reader who devoured a dozen or more novels and mysteries every week, Sonnie channeled this lifelong joy of reading by volunteering at the Sun City Library. She especially enjoyed her weekly hairdressing visits to the Beauty Parlor, Oldies Rock 'N Roll, and bargain hunting. Sonnie never met a garage sale she didn’t like. In keeping with her wishes, no memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests donations to First Book (www.firstbook.org).
