Sinclair: Interesting to see how Sun City board functions

Posted

Interesting story (“McAdam gets boot from board,” Sun City Independent, July 7, 2021) on how the Recreation Centers of Sun City board functions.

A duly elected board member disagrees with the “good ol’ boys” (seven members of the 2021 board were also on the 2020 board), so they have a closed door meeting, with less than 24 hours notice, declare that person “incapable” and remove her from the board. Some of that may be within board policy, some of it is probably not, and none of it is acceptable adult behavior.

This goes way beyond pickleball, which was the stated problem subject. Karen does have a strong concern for pickleball and voiced her thoughts to the board well more than a year ago, before deciding to run for office.

What was essentially the same board in 2020 refused to allow pickleball to completely reopen in Sun City, citing COVID issues, until months after every other community in metro Phoenix had done so with zero negative results. Perhaps the board is “incapable” of dealing with the subject in a rational manner. Why else would there even be discussion about additional courts being built at Mountain View?

This is much more about control. With an apparent 7-1 majority, you’d think that’d be enough, but apparently not. The board seems incapable of even listening to an independent voice, never mind trying to work with that member. This is not a new issue for some board members.

Three things need to happen immediately.

1) Karen McAdams needs to be reinstated to the board, with no excuses for delay.

2) The board, through President Sue Wilson, needs to issue a public apology to Karen and to the people of Sun City who elected her (and the rest of the board).

3) The board, in it’s entirety, needs to resign.

The third will not happen, of course, but the first two should have happened before this letter was even emailed, never mind printed.

Thank you, Karen, for your work on our behalf. You have our complete support as much as needed.
