Maricopa County residents, especially children and older adults, need to limit any outdoor activities today as pollutants in the air are expected to exceed the federal health standard for ozone.

Arizona Department of Environmental Quality issued the Ozone High Pollution Advisory on Thursday. The air is expected to clear up on Saturday and then stagnant conditions return with a possible ozone increase on Sunday and Monday.

“Ground-level ozone is formed from a chemical reaction among sunlight — volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides,” said Erin Jordan, department spokeswoman.
