Phoenix native honored by U.S. Navy

Shawn Kennedy named Warfighter of the Week

A Phoenix native received a big commendation from the U.S. Navy on June 30.

The Navy announced in a news release that Machinist's Mate 2nd Class Shawn Kennedy had been awarded the Warfighter of the Week honor  recently at the Naval base in Newport News, Virginia.

He was given the award by U.S. Navy Capt. Cassidy Norman, who is the commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis.

The ship is currently based in the Newport News Shipyard undergoing an overhaul and refueling so it can get back on the water to defend the U.S.

Navy officials said that more than 90% of all trade travels by sea, with approximately 95% of the world's international phone and internet traffic carried through fiber optic cables on the ocean floor.
