Man dies following shooting outside bar in Peoria

Posted

A shooting outside a bar in Peoria has now turned fatal.

Around 2:20 a.m. Sunday, June 14, police responded to an unknown trouble call at Coop's Bar & Grill near 83rd and Peoria avenues.

Police said the caller advised that a man had a gun and was pointing it at others.  While the caller was on the phone with dispatchers, they said the male had just fired the gun and was seen driving from the scene in a black SUV.

Officers arrived on scene and located a 24-year-old man with a gunshot wound. They provided medical care as the Peoria Fire-Medical Department responded to the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Additional responding officers located the suspect SUV driving westbound on Peoria Avenue and attempted to stop the vehicle. However, police said the vehicle failed to stop. After a short pursuit, the vehicle crashed behind a business near 91st and Peoria avenues. The driver was arrested without incident.

Police identified the suspect as Frank Alvin Vaquera Jr., 28, of Phoenix. According to court documents, the suspect claimed to not remember shooting anyone and broke down crying, saying he would have remembered if he did. He also mentioned he had mental health ailments and had been taking medications for bipolar and schizophrenia disorders, records state.

Police said the victim remained hospitalized Monday, June 15. According to court documents, hospital staff did not expect the victim to survive his injuries.

Peoria police on Thursday confirmed the victim has died, but didn't release his name. Facebook posts appears to identify him as Antonio Vaughn, who is listed on the county medical examiner's website as having died June 15.

The suspect was jailed in lieu of $500,000 bond on charges of murder, aggravated assault, unlawful flight from law enforcement and weapons violations.

Police said the incident appears to be isolated between the two people involved and there are no outstanding suspects.

Anyone with information on the case can contact Peoria police at 623-773-8311.

A candlelight vigil for Mr. Vaughn took place June 17 near Coop's. People were encouraged to wear white and blue. A car wash fundraiser is 7 a.m. Saturday, June 20 at Puffin Clouds near 83rd and Peoria avenues.

Coop's Bar & Grill posted on Facebook that 10% of all sales will be donated to the family of the victim until further notice.
