New daily highs in Arizona as state tops 84,000 cases, 1,720 deaths

Maricopa County surpasses state case rate per 100,000 residents

Arizona is reporting its most day-to-day cases and deaths as the state surpasses 84,000 cases of COVID-19.

The Arizona Department of Health Services reports 84,092 cases and 1,720 deaths of the novel coronavirus, up 4,878 and 88 from Tuesday, respectively.

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health reports 52,020 cases and 779 deaths in Arizona’s most populous county.

The numbers of cases per 100,000 residents in the state is 1,155 as of Monday, using 2019 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. Maricopa County has surpassed that at 1,165, the first time the county has been above the state rate since the first two months the virus broke out. Santa Cruz County is at 3,875 cases per 100,000 residents, the highest in the state. Navajo and Apache counties, which include parts of the Navajo Nation, are at 3,338 and 3,312 cases per 100,000 residents, respectively.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

But for some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

Arizona hospitals are hiring out-of-state nurses, squeezing in more beds and preparing for the possibility of making life-and-death decisions about how to ration care as they get ready for an expected surge of coronavirus patients in one of the nation's worst hot spots.

Meanwhile, parents, teachers, businesses and their customers are hunkering down for at least another month of state-imposed closures in a belated effort to slow the spread of the virus and limit overcrowding at hospitals.

Arizona and several other states, including Texas and Florida, that were reopening their economies have clamped back down over the past week as they eclipsed records for infections and hospitalizations. Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, however, went further than other states by ordering gyms and movie theaters to close and postponing the start of school until mid-August.
