INDEPENDENT NEWSMEDIA
Mesa police officers shot and killed a man Wednesday morning after he crashed his car into a patrol vehicle where they were standing, police said.
Police received a call about 4:10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, from an employee of the 7-Eleven at 815 S. Dobson Road in Mesa.
The employee said in his 911 call that there was a vehicle parked in the lot with a man inside. The worker said he did not know if the man was OK and asked for police assistance.
A license plate number for the vehicle was checked, and authorities said it was stolen from Chandler.
Mesa police attempted to contact the man in the car by using sirens and other means.
When that failed to work, officers placed two patrol vehicles behind the suspect’s car.
“At this point the suspect began moving around in the cab and started the vehicle,” police said in a statement.
“The vehicle reversed at a high rate of speed, squealing the tires and hitting the front of one of the patrol vehicles. Two officers that were next to the patrol vehicle tried to back up and this is when the officer involved shooting occurred.”
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured, police said.
Detectives have taken over the investigation and are working on identifying the suspect and interviewing all parties involved, according to police.
