Mesa Mayor John Giles backing Harris in presidential race

Longtime Republican says party needs to return to its roots

Posted

Mesa Mayor John Giles on Monday became the talk of national politics when he endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris for president.

A longtime Republican, Giles wrote an op-ed stating he was backing Harris and denouncing former President Donald Trump, who accepted the GOP nomination two weeks ago, according to The Hill.

In making the endorsement, Giles evoked the memory of Arizona Sen. John McCain in claiming "country over party," and denouncing Trump and Arizona Republicans who refused to accept the results of the 2020 election.

It's not the first time Giles has stepped across the aisle in the past few months. As the mayor of the state's third-largest city, Giles commended President Joe Biden in a tweet earlier this month on the day he announced he was dropping out of the presidential race.

Giles, who is term limited from running again for the Mesa mayor's seat, also condemed political violence after an attempted assassination attempt on Trump earlier this month and wished the former president a speedy recovery.
