Meet Your Neighbors: Cyndi Diliberto, Christine Davison co-founders of Sunset Scents

Names: Cyndi Diliberto and Christine Davison, co-founders of Sunset Scents, which celebrates one year on May 1, 2021.

Town/neighborhood: Mesa

When and why we moved here: We started Sunset Scents after the previous company we sold for, Gold Canyon International in Tempe, went out of business in March 2020. We began by making the candles in our garage but then moved into our current building on Ray Road by Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in July 2020 where we currently manufacture the candles.

What we like most about living here: What we love most is that we both live in Mesa, so having the candle factory so close makes it an easy commute and still allows us the flexibility to help with family, children and grandchildren appointments and activities. It is a great community to live and work in. Cyndi is an Arizona native and was born in Mesa.

What we do: We manufacture highly fragrant candles in 15 core scents and another 15 seasonal in both medium (16 oz) and large (24 oz) sizes as well as monthly specialty candles and other home fragrance products.

What we like most about what I do: What we like most about what we do is that we get to provide our merchandisers/distributors a way to make money selling high-quality candles and have fun while doing it. We love that the customer has a great product to enjoy and share with family and friends.

Changes I’d like to see in this area: I would love to see more high-end restaurants in East Mesa and more small community events.

Favorite community cause and why: We love dog rescues. Christine’s dog Zailey and Cyndi’s dog Rufus are both from rescues and we would love to possibly partner with a rescue in Mesa sometime in the future to help raise money.

Our family:

  • Christine Davison, co-founder of Sunset Scents and director of marketing and sales: husband Antony Davison, a city of Mesa employee; daughter Brooke, 17, works at Dutch Bros in Mesa and Sunsplash as a lifeguard in Mesa; son Payton, 16, works at What’s Crakin Café in Mesa; and daughter Blair, 12, a gymnast at Desert Devils in Mesa.

  • Cyndi Diliberto, co-founder of Sunset Scents and director of operations: husband Drew Diliberto, a family man who helps care for their three granddaughters; and daughter Tina, 29, who works full-time and is a distributor for Sunset Scents while raising three daughters — all four are Mesa natives.

My interests and hobbies:

  • Christine: Travel, music, boating.
  • Cyndi: Family first, traveling, helping others.

The trait(s) we admire in others: The traits we admire in others are honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, grit, willingness to help and a positive attitude.

People who inspired us (and how):

  • Christine: My mother. She became a single mom of a 5-year-old and 3-month-old when my father died in an accident suddenly. She always was there for my sister and I and showed me how to be a strong, independent woman that could accomplish anything.
  • Cyndi: My parents that have proven to me that nothing can hold me back. If there is an obstacle in my way then think outside the box to make it through.

Our guiding philosophy: “You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want” — Zig Ziglar.
