Mayor declares Hispanic Heritage Month for Scottsdale

Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega has proclaimed the next four weeks as Hispanic Heritage Month within the city.
Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 will be Hispanic Heritage Month, Ortega announced during a Sept. 14 City Council meeting, where the mayor read aloud a proclamation and recognized Hispanic city employees.
“Scottsdale observes national Hispanic Heritage Month understanding this region was a part of Mexico until 1848, and whereas Hispanic Arizonans enrich the state of Arizona and our nation with their rich and vibrant traditions of faith, family, patriotism, work ethic, arts and culture,” Ortega said as part of the proclamation.
Ortega also noted Mexican Independence Day is Thursday, Sept. 16, and other Hispanic countries’ Independence Day is Sept. 15.
“Whereas Hispanic Americans are an important part of the culture and history of Scottsdale, Arizona, and continue to make significant contributions to the allure of Scottsdale,” Ortega said.
After the proclamation, Ortega thanked the city’s Diversity Task Force, who had many members in attendance, before reading their names aloud and taking a photo with them.
Thanked publicly by Ortega was: Assistant Police Chief Helen Gandara, Deputy City Attorney Luis Santaella, CIP Budget Manager Sylvia Dlott and Solid Waste Services Manager Manuel Castillo.
