Maricopa County adds 505 coronavirus cases Tuesday, 5 deaths

County public health data showed an jump in the number of coronavirus cases reported on Tuesday as well as an increase in the number of reported deaths.

Data from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health reported 505 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday and five new deaths.  The new number of cases was well above the seven-day rolling average while the number of deaths remained below that average.

County cases and deaths have returned nearly to the levels they were at before the county’s summer surge, but Tuesday's numbers stand in sharp contrast to those lower levels. COVD-19 cases peaked in the county in late June and early July, according to county public health data, reaching 3,825 cases in a day on June 29. In recent days, cases have been trending slightly upward. The county’s seven-day daily average of new cases was 196 on Friday, Sept. 11 and increased to 280 by Sunday, Sept. 20, the biggest increase since mid-July when the county began to decline from its surge.

That statistic has flattened out since then, landing at 283 on Wednesday, Sept. 29, the most recent day of complete data. The seven-day average has been consistently around that level but rising slightly.

The county’s surge in coronavirus-related deaths has lagged a couple weeks after the surge in cases, as is typical with COVID-19 reporting. The county’s worst single-day death total was 66 on July 15. Daily death totals have recently declined to the level they were at before the county’s surge. In the most recent day of complete data, Monday, Sept. 19, the seven-day daily average was six deaths a day. The seven-day death average has remained below 10 since Sept. 6.
