Man released from jail after Mesa crash that killed his wife

Posted

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office will not prosecute a man "at this time" for manslaughter after he was arrested in Mesa following a July 31 car crash in which his wife was killed.

Mario Galvan, 35, was released from jail after county authorities "declined prosecution on the manslaughter charge at this time," a spokesperson said.

The Mesa Police Department is still awaiting official laboratory results for Galvan’s blood alcohol content and "other video footage from an outside source," according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

"Once those items of evidence are received and reviewed the determination to refile criminal charges will be made at that time.  This investigation is ongoing."

Mesa police arrested Galvan the day after the crash.

Police said the incident occurred just after 3 p.m.  Sunday, July 31, when a Nissan Sentra was  speeding south on Gilbert Road.

For an unknown reason, police said, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a short thick metal pole, which was used to protect the power lines just south of Decatur Street.

The passenger, 35-year-old Kasey Galvan, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Galvan, the driver, remained at the accident scene.

Mesa police officers had Galvan complete field sobriety tests. Impairment was observed, and Galvan was taken into custody, police said.

Galvan was booked into jail for manslaughter and held on a $250,000 bond prior to his release.
