Man accused of shooting at multiple vehicles on freeway west of Buckeye

A man was arrested on suspicion of shooting at multiple vehicles along a freeway west of the Valley.

The incident happened around 11:15 a.m. Sunday along Interstate 10 near Salome Road.

According to records, the Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to the area to locate a U-Haul truck towing a small passenger car on I-10.

Multiple people told DPS the driver of the U-Haul had shot at their vehicle with a gun as they were driving eastbound in the same direction.

DPS located and arrested the driver of the U-Haul near I-10 and Miller Road in Buckeye without incident. He was identified as Zachary James Machado, 28, of Cresson, Texas, according to court documents.

Authorities spotted a .22 caliber handgun and a spent bullet casing from the suspect vehicle, records state.

DPS noted a strong odor of alcohol coming from Mr. Machado’s breath, records state. A blood alcohol content was not available.

According to court documents, six people in two vehicles were reported as victims of the shooting. A third vehicle is believed to have been struck, but DPS stated only two remained at the scene.

According to his release orders, Mr. Machado was jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond on charges of endangerment, drive-by shooting, DUI, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and criminal damage.
