When I read a recent letter to the editor (“Newspaper wrong to publish article,” Daily Independent, Aug. 10, 2022) stating that a particular article (“State’s donors double down,” Daily Independent, July 28, 2022) should not have been published, my interest is peaked.
Fortunately, the recyclers had not yet gotten hold of the July 28 paper, so I was able to reread the article. I found myself being thankful that Linda Perl was not the person who decides what goes in the Independent.
Besides the various “freedom of the press” issues that arise, it seemed to me that she missed the main point of the piece, which, to me, was that Trump supporters, those who donate money to his various needs, don’t care that he was part of a plot to overturn the 2020 election and thus overthrow the legitimate government of the United States.
I found the article factual and to-the-point and not at all a glorification of his POV. Thanks for including it.
It brought to mind the old joke: Question: Why has there never been a successful coup d’état in Washington, D.C.? Answer: Because there is no American embassy there.
