Homicide suspects chased from New Mexico to Arizona along I-40

A 53-mile stretch of westbound Interstate 40 was closed Friday morning east of Holbrook in northeastern Arizona because of a trooper-involved shooting.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said in a Twitter post that at least one trooper was involved in a shooting but that no troopers or suspects were injured.

Around 2 a.m. Friday, DPS was notified by the New Mexico State Police that they were pursuing a vehicle of heavily armed homicide suspects into Arizona from New Mexico, according to a news release.

Arizona DPS responded to the area and took over the pursuit. DPS said as troopers pursued the suspects, the suspects shot at officials from both agencies.

Authorities from DPS returned fire, disabling the suspect vehicle. The suspects were then arrested and are being held in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department.

The suspects were a 37-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman.

Information about the homicide, which includes stolen weapons, was referred to Los Angeles police, who have been investigating a homicide in San Pedro since Wednesday, Feb. 26.

ADOT said westbound traffic was being detoured off I-40 at Sanders and back to I-40 at Holbrook via U.S. 191 and U.S. 180. The detour is 109 miles long.

The closure ended around noon.
