Higginson: We must remain committed to new American infrastructure plan

Posted

The passage of the bipartisan infrastructure bill through Congress, and onto President Biden’s desk, is a monumental moment for Arizona and the nation. It will fulfill long-overdue commitments to rebuilding roads and bridges, modernizing the grid, and advancing critical public works projects.

Above all, it shows that who you send to Washington to fight for your needs matters.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema has led on negotiating the bipartisan infrastructure deal since day one. Sen. Mark Kelly and Rep. Greg Stanton have championed Arizona’s transportation priorities.

Our state will benefit from their tireless advocacy. For instance, Interstate 11, the new corridor between the Mexican border, greater Phoenix and Las Vegas, and a highway of national significance, has been a top priority for our leaders.

As executive director of the Interstate 11 Coalition, I can tell you that the increase in commerce, trade and tourism that I-11 brings will benefit Arizonans for generations to come, while relieving current congestion challenges.

The bill provides Arizona a minimum of $5 billion and another $225 million to repair roads and bridges over five years. For Interstate 11’s future, the key piece of this legislation creates the $17 billion National Infrastructure Project Assistance Program, which, for the first time, makes federal funds available for extensive environmental studies required by federal law for new transportation projects.

After years of planning, this provision creates an opportunity for the Arizona Department of Transportation to advance the next phase of studies needed for I-11 to be designed and built. This provision is included thanks to the hands-on work of Sen. Kelly and Rep. Stanton.

Arizona is fortunate to have leaders in Washington who advocate for the best interests of our state. Their efforts ensure Arizona will have the resources necessary for our infrastructure to keep pace with our rapid growth.
