Griffiths: Sen. Sinema should support Freedom to Vote Act

Posted

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema has never been afraid to take on tough fights in the name of freedom and equality. I first met Sen. Sinema in 2008 when she led the campaign for marriage equality. I saw her willingness to take on good fights, no matter how long the odds.

Sen. Sinema organized the campaign’s headquarters in her guest room. As her intern, she taught me it was our responsibility to ensure everyone’s right to participate in our democracy. Her commitment was impressive. She stayed true to her beliefs, even when the press wasn’t around.

In 2018, I was so excited when she was elected to the U.S. Senate. I was filled with hope knowing we’d have a fighter in Washington to stand up for Arizonans. Now, I’m counting on her to still lead the good fight — this time to pass the Freedom to Vote Act.

We need her to be a vocal leader to get the FVA across the finish line. This will ensure everyday voters have a bigger voice in government and will help get big, secret money out of politics.

Partisan state legislatures are chipping away at our freedom to vote. This year, over 18 states, including Arizona, have enacted laws that restrict our freedom to vote. More than 70% of likely voters, including a majority of Republicans and independents, support the FVA.

Sen. Sinema, we’re counting on you. Together, we can take on this tough fight and win for Arizonans — and every voter in America.
