Glendale police arrest man in deadly stabbing of teen

A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 14-year-old boy in Glendale.

Rudy Jaramillo faces one count of second-degree murder.

Around 11:30 p.m. Nov. 8, Glendale police responded to the area of 51st Avenue and Bethany Home Road for a stabbing in front of a home.

Police said a fight had ensued involving three adults and Elijah Ochoa-Gamez, 14. During the fight, one of the suspects stabbed Ochoa-Gamez.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died. His family allowed his name to be released to aid in the investigation.

Detectives had released a description of the three adults in hopes the public would identify those involved. The three adults were all identified, located by detectives, and interviewed, police said.

The male suspect who stabbed the teen was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 27, just a few blocks away from the murder. He was identified as Rudy Jaramillo.

Mr. Jaramillo indicated to detectives the altercation was over a stolen bicycle. According to court documents, Mr. Jaramillo and another person allegedly stole the bike from the front of the victim's home. Ochoa-Gamez's brother and a friend followed the thieves, reclaimed the bike, and came back to the victim's home.

However, Mr. Jaramillo and two other people also came to the home, with Mr. Jaramillo reportedly seen with a knife.

He was confronted by a male witness, according to court documents, and a fight ensued.

According to Mr. Jaramillo, Ochoa-Gamez tried to intervene by placing Mr. Jaramillo in a “choke-hold.” Mr. Jaramillo stated he pulled out a knife from his pants pocket and reached back and “poked,” the teen with the knife. A male witness tried to get in the way but was blocked by another male and his pit pull. The male witness told police he had been cut in the arm by Mr. Jaramillo before the suspects fled.

He was jailed in lieu of a $750,000 bond with a court date March 5.
