A police report released last week reveals new details into a fatal shooting from over two years ago, including that two suspects had been identified and turned themselves in within days of the incident.
However, it does not appear either has faced charges from that night. Documents viewed Aug. 27 by the Daily Independent do not contain any information on whether Peoria police developed probable cause to arrest the alleged suspects.
“I just followed up with Detectives, the case is not complete yet,” a Peoria police spokesman stated Tuesday. “Sounds like they have to wrap a few things up still.”
The incident in question occurred April 20, 2018 in a parking lot next to Harkins Theatres near 99th and Northern avenues in Peoria.
Back then, Peoria police said they responded to a shooting around 2 a.m. at the location and found a man with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time, police had said two suspects possibly left the scene, but no other suspect information was available.
According to the report, the death of Ahmed Sabah Rashid Alhadidi occurred after he and three friends were leaving Cabin Whiskey and Grill and headed to their vehicle. Once there, Mr. Alhadidi started urinating between his friend’s vehicle and someone else’s vehicle.
At some point, two males approached the group and appeared upset at what was going on, according to the report. Mr. Alhadidi’s friends claimed they apologized for the incident, but an argument and fight ensued.
As the argument escalated, one of the alleged suspects retrieved two firearms from their vehicle and placed them on top of the other group’s vehicle, according to the report. That same male then put his firearm in his waistband, but Mr. Alhadidi then tried to take the weapon away. At some point, Mr. Alhadidi gained possession of the gun and reportedly pointed it at the other unknown male.
That male then grabbed his own gun and allegedly shot Mr. Alhadidi once in the chest, records state. The alleged shooter then fled in his vehicle while his accomplice fled on foot.
Police spent the day canvassing the area and interviewing witnesses, to include the victim’s friends. They claimed Mr. Alhadidi did not have possession of the suspect’s weapon at any point. Later, DNA evidence collected from one of the suspect’s guns would show Mr. Alhadidi touched the weapon at some point, records state.
Later in the day, police received a phone call from a male claiming to have been involved in the shooting, according to the report. He agreed to meet with police, but as officers prepared to head to the male’s house, they tried calling him back but were sent to voicemail. Believing he could be a flight risk, officers started heading out to his residence. At some point, police received another call from an attorney who said he was with the alleged suspect at a Scottsdale office. The Daily Independent is not naming the suspect as it does not appear he has been charged.
The attorney claimed that the shooting was in self-defense after Mr. Alhadidi and his friends became verbally and physically aggressive towards the alleged suspect and his friend. The alleged suspect claimed that he told Mr. Alhadidi to drop his friend’s weapon prior to shooting him. Police finally met with the alleged suspect and conducted searches of his residence and vehicle. However, records do not indicate the male was ever arrested.
Three days after the shooting, police contacted the second alleged suspect, who agreed to meet after obtaining an attorney. His version of the story also matched up with the alleged shooter’s in that Mr. Alhadidi and his friends were the aggressors.
Examination of the alleged suspects’ firearms revealed that Mr. Alhadidi’s DNA was on one of them, records state.
The report didn't indicate any finality to the case — no charges, no arrests or a termination of the investigation. All that’s provided is witness and officer statements, as well as those from the alleged suspects and their attorneys.
As the Peoria police spokesman said, detectives are still wrapping up the ongoing investigation.
