El Mirage hosts domestic violence prevention events

The El Mirage City Council Meeting on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. will proclaim October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, kicking off a series of prevention activities.

El Mirage is hosting a Domestic Violence Awareness Virtual Forum at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at 6:30 through the El Mirage Cares program, a City initiative to educate and provide information and resources regarding important social issues.

The forum is free and open to the public and will feature expertise from the El Mirage Police Department’s Victim Assistance Unit and local nonprofits including New Life Center and DTB Inmigrante. Join the virtual webinar here: https://zoom.us/j/95397424241

In 2021, the El Mirage Police Department Victim Assistance Unit responded with assistance to 465 domestic violence calls.

The Maricopa Association of Governments is raising its focus on emotional abuse this October, as well as, calling attention to the ability for victims to text 911.

“While emotional abuse may not show its ugly head by way of a black eye, bruises or broken bones, it is domestic violence and it can lead to physical violence, as well as, other domestic violence abuses,” said El Mirage Councilmember Anita Norton, who serves as Chair of the MAG Regional Domestic Violence Council. “And remember — if you are in danger, call 911 if you can, text if you can’t.”

Throughout the month of October El Mirage City Hall, Police Department and Fire Department buildings will be lit purple to heighten awareness of domestic violence.

Police officers’ uniform patches will be purple and pink in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The City also held a “Wear Purple Day” which will be featured on social media channels throughout the month of October.
