David John Mutton

Posted

On December 2, 2019, David Mutton passed away at the Hospice of the Valley facility in Surprise, AZ, after suffering a severe stroke on November 6th at Banner Del Webb Hospital.

David was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His parents came by boat to America from England in late 1948. David was born July 14, 1949. He grew up loving sports and played hockey, softball and tennis. He graduated from Cooper High School and attended the University of Minnesota. He joined the Army and served in the Vietnam War. For 15 years he worked in Procurement for the Schmitt Music Company in Minneapolis. He likes to tell how his boss always finished meetings by saying, “...and remember, there are people out there like Mutton, who don’t want to learn to play an instrument.” And he never did.

David moved to Olympia, Washington in 1984 to partner in opening 4 sporting goods stores.

While in Washington, he golfed, played softball, racquetball and tennis. It was there he met his second wife, Ginny, while playing racquetball on the ‘challenge court’. They were married on November 15, 1986.

In 1990 they moved to San Diego, CA, where David started his first official remodeling business, ‘Just Re-Do It’. They lived in San Diego for 5 years, then moved back to Washington, where they designed and built a beautiful home overlooking the Puget Sound. In addition to sports, David was always involved in building and remodeling homes wherever he lived.

In 2011, they moved to Sun City West, AZ, on the advice of friends who said it was like “Disneyland for adults.” It wasn’t long before neighbors saw the kind of work he did in remodeling his home and immediately requested he remodel theirs. The word spread, and so, he revived his ‘Just Re-Do It’ business, eventually bringing in a close friend from WA, Paul Schulte, as his business partner.

In SCW, David played platform tennis, pickle ball, golf, and joined the softball league. After surgery on his foot, he switched to playing golf at least twice a week, while still going strong in remodeling, which he considered his true passion in life. He also took up watercolor painting and had planned to learn calligraphy and join the woodworking club when he had more time.

David will be remembered for his quick wit and unique sense of humor. He was honest and fair and strived to always “do the right thing.”

David was preceded in death by his parents, Stella and Laurence Mutton, and his sister, Jennet Packman. He leaves behind his wife Ginny and brother-in-law Gary, his beloved brother Andy, his favorite sister-in-law Billi, his adored nieces Nina and Vanessa, 4 great nieces and nephews, dozens of aunts, uncles, and cousins in England, Washington and Wisconsin, and many, many good and dear friends everywhere he lived.

David wanted no service, but instead, requested that anyone who wants to celebrate his life, get together for a barbecue, wear shorts (even if it’s over long pants!) and enjoy some good food, drinks, and shared stories. “No crying please.” A BBQ will be held in his honor at a time and place to be determined after the Holidays.
