The U.S. Department of Education named Scottsdale Unified School District’s Cherokee Elementary School a 2022 National Blue Ribbon School on Sept. 16.

Nominated by the Arizona Department of Education to apply for the honor, Cherokee is being recognized as an “Exemplary High-Performing School” for its students’ performance on state assessments and nationally normed tests, according to a press release. Five other Arizona schools, and a total of 297 nationwide, were included in the USDOE announcement.

Principal Walt Chantler stated in the release that the learning environment created by Cherokee’s team of talented teachers and staff prioritizes high academic expectations and has the strong support of the school’s parent community.

“This award is the result of everyone working together to ensure that our students receive a first-class education,” Chantler stated. “Our willingness to constantly improve is one of our strengths. Cherokee students work hard, are considerate, accountable and respectful, and are fully engaged in their learning on a daily basis.”

Cherokee, located in Paradise Valley, is home to 700 pre-K through fifth-grade students.

In 1988, Cherokee was Scottsdale Unified School District’s very first school to receive U.S. Blue Ribbon recognition. Six others have received the honor since then.

Superintendent Dr. Scott Menzel extended his congratulations to Chantler and the entire Cherokee Charger team on their well-deserved recognition, the press release added.

“This distinction is the result of hard work and dedication by our students, staff, and families, with a focused commitment to creating a culture and climate that supports sustained achievement and student success,” Menzel stated.
