Buckley: Sens. Must oppose Weil’s nomination to Department of Labor

Posted

Last week, Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly joined with a bipartisan majority in voting against President Joe Biden’s nomination of David Weil to head the Hour and Wage Division at the U.S. Department of Labor, and thank heavens they did.

It was the best vote they could possibly have cast for small business owners and their employees.

Mr. Weil’s controversial nomination put a good deal of fear into the women and men who make our economy run. Weil’s track record shows little empathy for small employers and creating ways to make it easier for unions to organize companies by reclassifying franchisees as employees.

The franchise business model has been an important vehicle of economic mobility for minority populations in Arizona and around the country. Weil’s policies would have disproportionately harmed these entrepreneurs.

After the economic turmoil associated with the pandemic, high gas prices, inflation, and the supply chain, the last thing employers need are additional burdens imposed on them by their own government.

By rejecting Mr. Weil’s nomination, Sens. Sinema and Kelly voted to save jobs.
