Brady: Reader likes insights on legislation

Posted

Big thanks to Shelby Stults for her very enlightening guest commentary (“Utilities may give customers reasons to sweat,” Sun City West Independent, March 2, 2022).

Her insights regarding House Bill 2101 and Senate Bill 1631 show yet again the ability of the public utilities to persuade members of the state legislature to give them more power. The utilities are monopolies with a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders, not their customers.

The possibility for customers to have choices is not in the financial best interest of the utilities. The ability for the utilities to do what they want, when they want and how they want without anyone holding them accountable is good business — for them.

The utilities have abundant financial resources to use to get legislation that works for them. HB 2101 and SB 1631 are two examples.
