Gracie McGovern, of Scottsdale, shot a final-round 3-under 68 to win in the girls division while Rio Newcombe, of Gilbert, put up a 6-under 65 on the boy’s side to win the 2021 State Junior Golf Championship.

Held at TPC Scottsdale’s Champions Course, June 15-16, after the first round,  McGovern sat three strokes off the pace set by Sydney Seigel and Kendall Hayward. In the second round, she took the lead into the clubhouse with four birdies on the back nine to finish in first place at even-par 142, according to a press release.

Aaryanna Morris of Avondale followed a first-round 73 with an even-par 71, which included birdies on the final two holes, to finish T2 at 2-over-par 144. Seigel, the release said, shot a final round 73 to join Morris in second place.  Sydney Bryan of Mesa picked up solo-fourth place after shooting 73-72—145, +4. One shot behind, Mattison Frick of Peoria came in T5 alongside Anya Mathur of Scottsdale at 4-over-par 146.

In the first round of the boy’s competition, Davis Johnson posted the lone round in the 60s, 67, which put him in the lead by four strokes and settled in fifth place after following with a 74, while Rio Newcombe rushed to the front of the pack, putting up an early 6-under 65. He capped off his round with an eagle on the par-5 17th hole. His next stop is the 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur set for July 19-24 at The Country Club of North Carolina, Village of Pinehurst.

Tied for second place, Charlie Palmer of Phoenix (72-67) and Cade Anderson (71-68) of Scottsdale shot 3-under-par 139. George Rubelsky of Phoenix took fourth place at 2-under-par 140 (71-69), and three players finished tied for fifth place a 1-under 141: Noah Nuez, Carlos Astiazaran and Davis Johnson, added the release.
