Saguaro falls to Chandler in inaugural Open Division championship

Posted

Saturday, Dec. 7, was a day of firsts on the Arizona high school football scene.

Saguaro High School lost to Chandler High School 42-35 at Sun Devil Stadium in the inaugural Open Division Championship. This was the first year Saguaro hasn't won a state title since  2012.

Saguaro is part of the 4A conference but with the new playoff rules, the Sabercats competed in the Open Division, which features the top eight teams in the state from across the 4A, 5A and 6A conferences.

Chandler, a 6A team, won its fourth consecutive title but had to fend off Saguaro in the second half to get there.

The Wolves  outscored the Sabercats 28-7 in the first half but Saguaro fired back with a 28-14 advantage in the second half.  Chandler led throughout the game.
