Rotary Club of Scottsdale awards $70K in scholarships

The Rotary Club of Scottsdale through its Club Foundation has awarded its annual scholarships to graduating Scottsdale Unified School District high school seniors.

The scholarship program is a district-wide competition honoring outstanding achievement in eight categories, according to a press release.

This year 14 different scholarships, totaling $70,000, were awarded to students nominated by SUSD high schools, via school guidance counselors.

Each school may nominate up to two people in each category, the release said of students who must attend an accredited educational institution. Scholarships are paid directly to the institution on the winner’s behalf.

Recipients:

  • Bob and Louise McCall Visual Arts $10,000 Scholarship Winner -Danielle Sharkey of Chaparral High School;
  • Peter G. Fish Vocational/Trade Scholarship Winners - 1st Place $6,000 to Deborah Park, Chaparral High School; 2nd Place winners $4,000 each to Adam Vjestica and Joe Mack of Desert Mountain High School;
  • Bob Murray Performing Arts Scholarship Winners - 1st Place $6,000 to Daniel Hutton of Saguaro High School; 2nd Place $4,000 to Kamryn Smith, Desert Mountain High School;
  • Athletics Scholarship Winners: 1st Place $6,000 to Caelan Koch of Saguaro High School; 2nd Place $4,000 to Kadin Beler of Arcadia High School;
  • Peter G. Fish Science/Technology Scholarship Winners - 1st Place $6,000 to Kayli Battel of Saguaro High School; 2nd Place $4,000 to William Noll of Saguaro High School;
  • Peter G. Fish Business Scholarship Winners - $6,000 to Brianna Iannone of Chaparral High School; 2nd Place $4,000 to Jaclyn Fishbach of Desert Mountain High School;
  • Col. Park Shaw Scholarship for First Responders/Military Winner – Abigail Staley of Desert Mountain High School; and
  • Norval O. Tyler Scholarship Winner - Daniel Hutton of Saguaro High School.

Rotary Club of Scottsdale’s 2020 Scholarship Committee Chair Gary Chontos thanked the 27 Rotarian and guest interviewers who participated in the 36 student interviews held via Zoom conference calls, according to the release, acknowledging the high school counselors who also participated.

Additionally, Club President Christopher West congratulated all the students who were nominated by their schools, the release said.

He thanked all the Rotarians, who through Club fundraisers along with donations to the foundation, made the scholarships available during the past 66 years.
