New era of Southwestern Amateur Golf Championship tees off in Scottsdale

Posted

From Wednesday, June 16 to Saturday, June 19, the Southwestern Amateur Golf Championship returns to Scottsdale at the Desert Mountain, Outlaw course.

The Outlaw course previously hosted the Southwestern in 2007, according to a press release, noting this is the 106th year the SWGA has held this tournament.

The tournament has expanded to include a field of 72 top ranked women, as well as 72 highly ranked men who will compete for the trophy in both fields. John Ranslem, executive director of the Southwestern Golf Association, recommended “more high-profile amateur events for women and the committee agreed that they wanted to be a part of the solution.”

The committee has offered another much-needed competitive amateur tournament for women, and have high expectations for the talented women who compete at such a high level, the release said, describing The Southwestern Amateur, which is a 72-hole stroke play championship for national-level women players with a handicap index of 3.2 or better, and men with an index of 1.2.

After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 40 and ties in each field, the release added.

This competitive field is comprised of college players from all five Power 5 conferences (PAC12, Big 12, Big Ten, SEC and ACC), collegians and juniors from 15 states, and top-ranked international players from several foreign countries. This year, there are 18 local Arizona players to follow.
