Lt. Smith promoted to oversee Scottsdale jail, downtown district
Posted
The Scottsdale Police Department has announced the promotion of Lt. Scott Smith to the rank of commander.
Cmdr. Smith’s promotion was effective Aug. 1, according to police officials.
Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Arizona State University.
He joined the Scottsdale Police Department in 1996 and served as a patrol officer, field training officer and firearms instructor. He became an operator with the SWAT team in February 2000 and that September, joined the special assignments unit as a detective.
Throughout his career, he became an instructor in force-on-force, building clearing, dignitary protection, active shooter response and less lethal munitions.
Smith was promoted to the rank of sergeant in June 2006. As a sergeant, he worked as a supervisor in patrol, a sergeant field trainer, and SWAT team leader. In 2008, he became the street crimes unit supervisor and along with six detectives addressed community problems and assisted the uniformed services bureau.
He was selected as the burglary unit sergeant in 2013, where he implemented the detective development program, which trained officers who were interested in detective assignments.
In 2015, Cmdr. Smith was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He served as a patrol watch commander in the Downtown District and was an alternate SWAT commander. He was selected to command the tactical operations section in 2017 and led the special assignments unit, technical operations unit, and the SWAT team.
In January 2021, he was selected for the special investigation section where he led the drug enforcement Unit, drug enforcement administration task force, criminal intelligence unit and the joint terrorism task force. During this time, he served on a council to address the opioid epidemic and a term chairing the Arizona State Governor’s Parent’s Commission on Drug Education and Prevention.
Cmdr. Smith will oversee the Downtown District and be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Downtown District and municipal jail, supervising and leading over 100 professional staff and sworn police employees.
