Grand Canyon Chapter DAR honors local educators, students

The Grand Canyon Chapter DAR recently held its annual awards ceremony, at the McDowell Mountain Club House, to recognize educators and students.
Regent of the 180 member chapter, Carmen Wendt, welcomed members and guests, according to a press release, noting the winners honored.
Chapter historian, Gera King, presented Zachary Zipser, of Coronado High School in the Scottsdale Unified School District, the Outstanding History Teacher Award; and the Outstanding Special Education Award to Gabriele Bittner (Elle) of Desert Oasis Elementary and Middle Schools in Tolleson.
Students were honored beginning with the Good Citizen Senior in High School, the release said.
Chairman Betty Heenan presented and congratulated Good Citizen winner Maeve Lomax of Chaparral High School in SUSD for also winning the Chapter, ASDAR State Award, and the NSDAR Division Level Award.
Virginia Curry, chapter librarian and chairman, introduced the five essay contest winners who each received a certificate, medal and gift card, according to the release.
Gael Zentai of Chaparral High School won the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest for high school students;
Sadie Becker of Cochise Elementary School won the Fifth Grade American Essay Contest;
Hilary Wollheim of Cocopah Middle School in Scottsdale won the Sixth Grade American History Contest;
William Ryan of Desert Canyon Middle School won the Seventh Grade American History Essay Contest;
Avery Patton of Desert Canyon Middle School was the Eighth Grade contest winner.
Ms. Twyla Preising of Chaparral High School was recognized for her students’ participation in writing essays for the contest during the past several years, added the release.
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is a service organization founded in 1890.
The DAR motto is “God, Home and Country,” while its objectives are historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
