Backpacks for people experiencing homelessness donated to UMOM

Three pallets of backpacks filled with a variety of supplies for people and their pets staying at emergency shelters has been donated to UMOM New Day Centers.

The donation was made on Jan. 14, when 25 board and management team members from Greater Good and The J.M. Smucker Company donated and then distributed more than 300 backpacks to UMOM shelter residents --- single women, families and youth experiencing homelessness.

“We have always been committed to supporting people and pets in the communities where we live and work and are always grateful for opportunities to do so,” said The J.M. Smucker Company Executive Director of Community Engagement and Philanthropy, Tamara Fynan, in a prepared statement. “In this spirit, we are pleased to support UMOM New Day Centers and their important work in partnership with GreaterGood.org.”

Each backpack contained a t-shirt, pair of socks, soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, re-useable water bottle, and a warm blanket. A few items were also included for those with furry friends: a slip lead, dog treats, dog toy, collapsible water/food dish.

“GreaterGood.org is pleased to be partnering with UMOM New Day Centers to distribute backpacks filled with basic survival supplies to the families, women and youth staying at their housing and shelter facilities. We are grateful for the continued support of our partner, Smuckers, who provided the pet food and treats for the packs. Their support has provided an important component to improve the health and lives of the people and pets that we serve,” said Brooke Nowak, director of people and planet programs at Greater Good.

Cassidy Penney, UMOM’s director of marketing and outreach, says donations such as these makes it possible for UMOM to continue its work in the community.

“We are deeply grateful for the generous donations from businesses like The J.M. Smucker Company and other nonprofit organizations like Greater Good.

This type of support makes it possible for UMOM to continue its mission of restoring hope, rebuilding lives and ending homelessness,” said Ms. Penney in a prepared statement.
