Rhein: State Route 88 no longer closed leading to Apache Lake

Posted

As a homeowner in Queen Creek/San Tan Valley, I’ve enjoyed reading the Queen Creek Independent as your paper has articles that can’t be found elsewhere. I always felt I was getting accurate news, until now.

Your May 1 issue that I received late last week wasn’t read until this past weekend due to letting any virus die off the paper. What I read is an article at the bottom of Page 10 regarding the road closure on State Route 88 leading to Apache Lake.

To be clear, that road closed due to a rock slide on approximately March 27. On April 20 it was reopened.

Having worked in the printing industry for 44 years, I am aware that there are print deadlines that need to be adhered to, to meet publication distribution dates. However, am also aware that the printer can easily place a “banner” over the article indicating a change to it. At the very least, the reporter of this article should have “confirmed” the reporting prior to the printer's run date.

By posting this article as it ran, the Independent gave inaccurate news, which in turn, could easily cause your readers to have false information.

I’m disappointed that this article was allowed to run as it did. I don’t believe I’ll continue reading the Independent, taking into account what I read, as the whole truth.

Editor's note: Thank you for the letter, which included an e-mail from Tonto National Forest sent on Wednesday, April 22. The road-closure story ran in both the Apache Junction/Gold Canyon and Queen Creek Independent newspapers. We didn't learn about the reopening until after the paper was printed. A correction is planned for the June 2020 issue. The online story was updated and can be read here.
