The Queen Creek Unified School District Governing Board Wednesday, Dec. 10 voted unanimously to approve the adoption of the name of the district’s newest school: Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary.
In all, a naming committee --- comprised of staff, students, administrators and parents --- brought three recommendations to the Governing Board for consideration for this new, state-of-the-art school of choice, a press release states.
Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary School is a new option for families across QCUSD. The new school will serve students in grades K-6th grade and will feature an accelerated science, technology, engineering,
art, and math curriculum.
The campus is part of the Barney Farms Fulton Home subdivision and will open in July of the 2020-21 school year, QCUSD officials estimate.
“On behalf of the QCUSD Governing Board and staff, we are honored to name this school after Katherine Mecham Barney. Naming our newest school after Mrs. Barney honors the great care and commitment that both the Mecham and Barney families have given to our community,” said district Superintendent Dr. Perry Berry in a prepared statement.
In 1948, the Mecham and Barney families bought raw desert to farm cotton where the school is located at the intersection of Signal Butte and Queen Creek roads. The original Barney farmhouse still sits on the land today.
Additionally, Newell Barney served on the QCUSD school board for 21 years, district officials say.
