Queen Creek Town Council virtually honors 2020 graduating class of Citizen Leadership Institute

The Queen Creek Town Council recently recognized 46 graduates of the Queen Creek Citizen Leadership Institute at a Town Council meeting.

Mayor Gail Barney congratulated the graduates for completing the program and for taking the initiative to learn more about the community, according to a release.

Due to the current circumstances and in an effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19, graduates did not attend the at the April 15 meeting in person.

Virtual certificates were presented to the graduates, the release states.

Graduates are: Denise Ames, Allen Bantau, Tommie Bonner, Kari Bjornberg, Chris Brady, Courtney Burnett, Penelope Camp, Jennifer Cardinale, Danielle Collinwood, Staci Curtis, Kristi Davis, Steve Faust, Stewart Ferrin, Karen Flaherty, Richard Flaherty, David Fulton, Lina Garcia, David Goldman, Ellen Hamilton, Angelee Holt, Helen Hunter, Frank lnfurna, Rick Jewett, Gary Klco, Monique Lawrence, Debra Mann, Amy Martinez, Bryan Matsuyoshi, Amy Morton, Shanda Navarro, Sarah Nieto, David Odiorne, Sue Pollard, William Pollard, Nicole Allen-Potter, Mary Lou Silva, Stacie Staats, Haylie Studebaker, Ashley Taylor, Nate Terwilleger, Adam Thompson, Gene Tolle, Whitney Tolle, Theresa Weinberg, Diane Wyatt and Gordy Ziebart.

The Citizen Leadership Institute consists of 10 sessions where participants learn about local issues and how local government works, the release states.

Participants get to know their mayor and council members, town staff and local leaders from other organizations. Topics range from planning and zoning to economic development and transportation. In order to graduate, participants must attend at least seven of the sessions and attend one Town Council meeting, one town committee or commission meeting, participate in one volunteer activity and one group project.

The purpose of the Queen Creek Citizen Leadership Institute is to:

  • Inform future town leaders and interested citizens about local government.
  • Encourage an interest in Queen Creek issues.
  • Provide a forum for community discussion about topics of concern.
  • Develop a pool of informed citizens who are willing to serve as community leaders on boards, commissions, task forces and among their neighbors
