Independent Newsmedia
[Update: The event has been postponed. "All events sponsored by the post are postponed until further notice. This includes the Coffee & Donuts, Yard Sale Benefit, Pinal County Stand Down & Fishing Derby," according to facebook.com/STVLEGION.]
The Joe Foss American Legion in partnership with Johnson Ranch will be hosting its sixth Annual Youth Fishing Derby Saturday, April 4.
The event will be held at the Johnson Ranch Catch & Release Fishing Pond at the south end of the Greens Park, according to a release.
Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and fishing starts at 9 a.m. This event is free of charge to all youth under the age of 18.
The free event will be open to the first 100 registrants in three age categories: 8 and under, 9-13, and 14 to 17.
First-, second- and third-place medals will be awarded to those who catch the largest fish --- based upon weight --- before being returned to the water.
Each registrant will receive a free hot dog, chips and drinks. Adults will be able to purchase hot dogs, chips and drinks from the Joe Foss American Legion Riders.
Kids are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles, but the group will have some poles on hand for use. Bait will be extremely limited, so each contestant is also encouraged to bring his/her own bait (treble hooks not allowed on lures).
The Joe Foss American Legion Post 97 was founded in June 2009, according to a post at facebook.com/STVLEGION.
"Our mission is to service local veterans with support services and the region’s youth with activities like fishing. Co-sponsors of the event include Johnson Ranch, San Tan Valley Veterans Center and Atlas Pediatric Dental Care," according to a release.
