$2.2M contract OK’d for sewer, water work on Germann, Meridian

A $2.2 million construction services contract has been approved for the construction of water and sewer lines along Germann Road, Signal Butte Road to Meridian Road; and a water line along Meridian Road, Germann to Ryan Road.

Queen Creek Town Council, at a recent meeting, approved the $2,243,509 contract with Western Utility Contractors, doing business as Overley’s.

The project includes constructing approximately 5,200 feet of 24-inch sewer trunk line and 18-inch water main on Germann Road. Approximately 4,000 feet of 12-inch water line and 1,400 feet of 10-inch water line will be constructed on Meridian Road, Paul Gardner, the town’s utilities director, said in a memo to the council.

“An item of special note respecting this project is that staff is requesting spending authority in the amount of $873,695 to potentially construct the sewer and water line using a low-strength concrete mix ‘CLSM’ as backfill for the trenches,” Mr. Gardner said in the memo.

“While the town allows for trenches to be backfilled with compacted native soils, the lines will be constructed in what is now Maricopa County right-of-way and county standards dictate the use of CLSM to backfill any trench. The $873,695 represents the cost to construct the project with CLSM, which is a 32% increase in project costs,” Mr. Gardner said.

The project will extend the town’s water and sewer utilities to the southwest corner of the newly annexed state lands property that extends from Meridian Road east to the CAP canal and from Germann north to the future 24 freeway, he said.
