Shemer Art Center displays two new exhibitions through Oct. 29

Posted

Two new exhibitions featuring more than 80 works of art are on display at the Shemer Art Center through Oct. 29.

"Nature in Balance" is an introspective exhibition juried by nationally and internationally recognized artist Julie Gilbert Pollard, according to a press release.

The exhibition at the center, 5005 E. Camelback Road, showcases 32 Arizona artists and their works, illustrating the calm of the natural world.

According to the juror “the exhibition includes a beautiful variety of style, personality and subject matter within the Nature in Balance theme,” the release stated.

"Variable Dimensions" is a solo exhibition featuring images and stories by Rafiq Majeed. Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Majeed began learning ceramics and fused glass art when he moved to the U.S in 2013.

He paints in oil, acrylic and ink, and he does mixed media in a personal and unique style. This exhibition combines his painting and ceramic skills.

“Both of these exhibitions reflect very unique perspectives,” said Shonna James, president/executive director of the Shemer, in a prepared statement.

“One exhibition combines 2D paintings and 3D ceramics to tell stories through images by Majeed, and the other group exhibition shares a very calming look at the world at a time of physical and mental disarray.”

Since 1984 the Shemer Art Center’s mission has been to support and showcase Arizona artists, the release said.

Located in the first home built in Arcadia, the Shemer Art Center, originally constructed in 1919, was purchased and donated to the city of Phoenix in 1984 by Martha Shemer, noted the release.
