Better together: Arcadia PR firm celebrates 30 years

Anniversaries are a time to celebrate where we come from, but they are also a time to celebrate how we’ve evolved.

There is no denying that these are stressful times — the coronavirus has changed the face of many businesses. But much of what “changed” this past year about media relations was simply getting back to its fundamental goal: thoughtfully building and nurturing relationships. And we fully expect these changes, or shall we call them reminders, to hold true in years to come.

Getting back to the basics is sometimes the best way to keep a solid footing in a quickly moving industry.

Before forming Gordon C. James Public Relations, Mr. James spent 20 years in a variety of business and political positions. After the 1988 presidential election, Mr. James joined President George H.W. Bush’s staff at the White House serving as lead advance representative for the President and also as director of invitations and ticketing for the 51st Presidential Inaugural Committee.

In 1990, he established Gordon C. James Public Relations as a full-service media relations, event management and governmental affairs agency.

Additionally, Mr. James served as director of advance for President George H. W. Bush in the 1992 presidential election. Beyond his work on political campaigns and community involvement, Mr. James has widespread experience in developing successful strategic branding and media campaigns for a variety of clients, according to a press release.

A third generation Arizonan, Mr. James is also on the board of ASU, Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, The Veterans Medical Leadership Council of Arizona, Crossroads and the Iron Springs Club in Prescott where he has spent summers since his birth.

He is a 2015 inductee into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame having served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1969 to 1975 as a military policeman.

“As a public relations firm, we have continued to learn, grow and evolve; but one thing hasn’t changed. Public relations is still about the relationships you build with clients, the community, the media and your partners. We shine in handling all aspects of telling a story to the press and manage the entire process to achieve placements that gain invaluable exposure,” said Mr. James in a prepared statement.

Since 2003, GCJPR has assisted fundraising by planning and producing the Veterans Medical Leadership Council key fundraising event, the “Heroes One and All” luncheon. The challenge was to generate strong sponsors and create a well-attended and publicized event.

GCJPR is responsible for the full production of the event, with attendance growing from 250 to well over 600. GCJPR has helped with the organization’s transition to a virtual event for the 2020 luncheon, the press release stated.

Mr. James was a founding board member of Honoring Arizona Veterans, the nonprofit that produces the annual Phoenix Veterans Day Parade.

The GCJPR team has worked with Scottsdale based Childhelp since 2007, helping them serve abused and neglected children. Projects include WINGS, Drive the Dream, and a national media tour that culminated in New York’s Time Square on the Today Show.
