West Valley mom to donate kidney for daughter’s transplant

Fundraiser to offset expenses Jan. 18 in Peoria

A West Valley teen and her family are raising money for her upcoming kidney transplant, which will take place Tuesday, Jan. 21, and her mom is her donor.

According to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, Carly Campbell, 15, of Peoria, suffers from chronic kidney disease due to kidney necrosis. She was born Jan. 7, 2005, by emergency cesarean section due to a placental abruption. This caused Carly to hemorrhage and lose blood flow to her kidneys for several hours prior to her being born.

At the time of delivery, she had lost most of her blood volume, and luckily received a blood transfusion shortly after delivery. Her kidneys suffered greatly, and at 3 days old was flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital with the possibility of needing dialysis. She spent three weeks in the NICU as her kidneys slowly rebounded.

Carly thankfully did not end up needing dialysis and has been able to avoid it for almost 15 years. She has been on medications since day one and as she has grown has needed to add more. Always knowing she would eventually need a kidney transplant, the time has come as her kidneys are functioning at only 13 percent now.

A Car Wash and Bake Sale will take place 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18 at Golden Spoke Cyclery, 6710 W. Thunderbird Road, Peoria, to raise money for her family’s medial expenses.

Glendale Charities is sponsoring Carly, and the event will include fire and police vehicles for kids to enjoy. Carly’s dad has been a Glendale police officer more than 20 years, and her mom is an RN at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, 5555 W. Thunderbird Road, Glendale.
