Peoria’s American Legion Auxiliary Unit 62, Sun City’s Caring Angels and the Arizona Daughters of the American Revolution-Agua Fria Chapter created and delivered backpack care packages to homeless veterans who are receiving cancer care at the Phoenix VA Health Care Facility.

“These veterans hold a very special place in our hearts,” Unit 62 member Candy Neagle stated in a news release. “We don’t question why they are homeless. We only care that they served our country and now they are ill. We want to give them some comfort and not feel forgotten.”

Each pack contained a crocheted plastic sleep mat (made from recycled plastic bags), a cloth face mask, water, snacks and various hygiene items.

“The mats take a lot of effort to make, but not only do they recycle plastic, they are waterproof, easy to clean, fold up tightly and keep the veteran off the hot or cold ground” Unit 62 and Caring Angels member Tish Alicki stated.

Providing these backpacks is part of the effort of Unit 62, located at 9847 W. Desert Cove Ave., to support the Phoenix VA.

Unit 62’s HEAL HER Art wellness program for women veterans took place at the Phoenix VA prior to going virtual during the pandemic. The Unit also regularly provides snacks for the chemotherapy treatment area and McDonald’s gift cards so veterans seeking care can get a meal on the weekends when the VA is closed. Other members are knitting hats and scarves for the cooler weather.

The unit is currently collecting gently used/clean sleeping bags, yarn and clean/used plastic grocery-style bags. These may be brought to the bingo hall at the John J Morris American Legion Post during business hours.
