Peoria chamber goes to task helping businesses weather COVID-19

Character is tested when you are up against it.

Over the last 60 days, in response to COVID-19, during this unprecedented time of uncertainty and duress within our Peoria business community, the Peoria Chamber of Commerce is making a difference for businesses in the West Valley.

However, there is no “I” in team. The Peoria chamber dedicated its resources to participate on a task force led by the city of Peoria in collaboration with ASUs Peoria Forward and the small business support organization of the SBA, the Small Business Development Center to respond, communicate and support the business community tirelessly.

Peoria is home to over 3,500 small businesses. All these businesses were impacted financially from this pandemic. Many closed or reduced staff to survive. During this time, a network of concerned and giving business owners, resource partners and residents jumped into action to help as well. Out of their gift of serving and giving hundreds were helped.

Deputy City Director Katie Gregory led our task force. Through her leadership, the team mobilized, responded and delivered for our community. We worked together, frequently, sometimes daily to define strategies that matter to business, and took action. Over the last 60 days 1,900 business were contacted. Over 700 volunteer hours of support were provided.

Over 300 Peoria restaurants were called by the task force, and of those calls scores of restaurants were provided take-out and delivery banners, digital "open for business" messaging and other messaging designed to drive purchase patronage during the crisis.

Over $5,000 in meat and vegetables were provided with over 150 free meals. And over $7,500 in durable goods were provided to first responders. The Peoria chamber deferred membership dues for a large portion of our members and focused on marketing their businesses through offers and digital communications.

What’s next?

As our businesses begin the process of restarting, both consumer and employee safety are paramount. Each business should leverage OSHA and CDC guidelines to put in place an effective restart safety plan. And our community must take action to support our small businesses through their patronage. The Peoria Chamber of Commerce’s partnership with the city of Peoria, Peoria Forward and SBDC is a powerful alliance for business owners to access. Joining the Peoria chamber now is more important than ever to enable your business success.

The Peoria Chamber of Commerce is operating virtual in the short term. All our virtual events are complimentary to members and non-members alike. These includes Coffee is for Closers sales training, weekly Percolate Peoria, our Virtual Happy Hours and more. Come join and get to know us! We would like to meet you and discuss your business.
