Pine District Councilmember recognizes transportation provider

Pine District Peoria City Councilmember Denette Dunn has recognized Northwest Valley Connect as nonprofit of the month.

Northwest Valley Connect began proving transportation alternatives to area residents in 2015. Dunn said this is a necessary service for many residents in an area that does not have public transit.

NVC provided 17,000 rides in 2019, covering everything from medical visits, food and medicine shopping and even entertainment.

The organization is not just reactive, but proactive as well, she said. Last March, while noting a significant problem in seniors making appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations, NVC partnered with Walgreens to arrange appointment blocks and provided transportation for many vulnerable individuals 65 and over with disabilities and veterans without access to transportation. The company provided round-trip travel from their homes to vaccine sites.

To demonstrate the need and the importance of this service NVC is enrolling new clients at the rate of about 20 a week. This demand has led to a growing need for volunteers. Currently NVC has 45 volunteers but needs twice that amount. The greatest need is for volunteer drivers using their own vehicles, with mileage reimbursement, and call center reservationists.

Anyone interested in volunteering or more information is encouraged to call 623-282-9304.
