Emily Hendricks, who teaches K-3 music at Great Hearts Archway Classical Academy in Glendale, at 23276 N. 83rd Ave., Suite 1, Peoria, was one of 200 Arizona teachers granted $2,500 recently through the Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers program.
Ms. Hendricks used the money to add even more music to her classroom.
She purchased Boomwhackers — tuned percussion tubes that teach pitch and rhythm, whether by banging them to find a beat or reading music to create pitches. In addition to the unique instruments she also purchased other classroom tools, including ukuleles to introduce her students to a diverse set of sounds.
Fiesta Bowl Charities began the program in 2016. Great Hearts Archway Classical Academy in Glendale, a free public nonprofit charter school, is a member of the Great Hearts Academies network of schools in metro Phoenix.
