Posted

For her service to the greater community Katie Roe has been named a Peoria Independent Hometown Hero in the Cheerleader category.

The Hometown Heroes Awards are a celebration of individuals who live, work or teach in the city, and Peoria businesses for their achievements and distinguished contributions to the community and beyond.

Roe will be honored at an awards luncheon next year. The fourth annual Hometown Heroes luncheon will honor those nominated in 2024.

What I like most about living and working in Peoria: It’s a tight-knit and supportive community. I have made wonderful friendships here and had a lot of support as an entrepreneur. I think it is the most beautiful part of the Valley too!

Personal background highlights: I grew up in the Midwest with a large family that was very connected to community. I was a competitive figure skater and college athlete, which taught me about leadership, accountability and mental toughness.

Professional background highlights: I have a degree in communications but no background in development, but I’m naturally very curious and eager to learn. I’ve had several different careers and each one has taught me something that I have brought with me to this current venture.

What would you tell people about why it’s important to make a difference? If you want something to change, you have to get to work and make it happen! You can’t wait for someone else to do it. If you don’t stand up for something, who will?

Changes I’d like to see in this area: I’d like to see more elevated businesses open in our community. Particularly Whole Foods and some additional upscale restaurant options. I also think smart development of roads, expansion of parks and trails, and a resort at or near the lake would be great!

My family (what have they taught you): My family has taught me to be resourceful, work hard, and they have encouraged my leadership abilities and professional pursuits.

My interests and hobbies: Enjoying life as a first time mom, hanging out with friends, ice skating!

The trait(s) I admire in others:  Knowing when to speak and when to listen.

People who inspired me (and how): Strong female leaders in our community like Cathy Carlat, Bridget Binsbacher and Amy Malloy. Great moms like my mom and friends Kristi Hunter and Amy Sap who are dedicated to raising great humans and making the world a better place!

My guiding philosophy: Get stuff done!

My advice to today’s youth: Who you choose to spend your life with will have the biggest impact on your life, more so than your career or anything else. It’s important to find work you enjoy and pursue what sets your soul on fire.

Name a couple future goals: Right now I’m focused on enjoying motherhood but I do tentatively have future plans for further entrepreneurship within the community!
