Maricopa County’s coronavirus death toll had its largest jump in nearly two weeks Wednesday, adding 30 new deaths along with 331 new COVID-19 cases, according to preliminary numbers from the county health department.

County cases and deaths have been returning to the levels they were at before the summer surge. COVD-19 cases peaked in the county in late June and early July, according to data from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, reaching 3,825 cases in a day on June 29. In the most recent day of complete data, Tuesday, Sept. 8, the county’s seven-day daily average was 202 cases, the lowest it’s been since May 26, just before the county’s surge.

Last week, Peoria area ZIP codes had 5,210 cases. As of Thursday, there were 5,312 cases in the Peoria area, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Over 90% of cases were mapped to the address of the patient's residence. If the patient's address was unknown the case was mapped to the address of the provider followed by the address of the reporting facility.

The coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough for most people. The vast majority of people who are diagnosed with COVID-19 recover.

But for some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness including pneumonia and death.
