notMYkid has been awarded a $224,940 AmeriCorps Grant from the Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family that will launch an AmeriCorps program to offer peer support for teens and “navigation services” for Maricopa County families.

The AmeriCorps program will use part-time members to provide the support, education and resources needed to help children and youth navigate difficult situations, prevent substance use disorder, and reach their full potential through positive life choices, according to a press release.

notMYkid will partner with schools, community organizations and healthcare providers to identify the most effective places and points of contact to station members at certain locations, the release said.

“As kids continue to encounter difficult situations in their lives, the need for touch points in our communities grows,” says Sarah Grado, COO of notMYkid, in a press release.

“This award allows notMYkid to take further steps to address that need with a comprehensive response that not only educates but provides a safe place for students to ask for help if they or someone they know is struggling with a substance use or mental health issue.”

notMYkid is recruiting 30 part-time members for 20 hours per week, preferably with young adults in recovery and people with experience navigating the behavioral health system to work at key locations in local communities, said the release, noting members are considered volunteers who receive a living allowance; and after completing a year of service they receive an education award.

The Governor’s Office awarded a total of $3.4 million in grants to 16 Arizona programs to engage AmeriCorps members in addressing critical community needs.

Through service and volunteering, AmeriCorps is able to improve lives, strengthen community, and foster civic engagement. Members have provided educational and social support to more than 26,000 children and youth in the past year, added the release.

Founded in 2000, notMYkid is an Arizona-based nonprofit dedicated to inspiring positive life choices while educating the community’s kids by providing a full continuum of life-saving prevention, early intervention, behavioral health support, and wellness programs.
