Meet the Girl Scout: Maya Hamer of Troop 2256 has the famous cookies

Posted

Cookie sales are underway as Maya Hamer, a Girl Scout from Scottsdale, joins her sister and others for the next six weeks as the Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council has its cookie season through Feb. 27.

Featuring traditional walk-up booths as well as new drive-thru cookie booths and online sales, the Girl Scouts cookie sale is noted as the “largest girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world.”

Proceeds from the annual cookie sales stay local, and fund programming, projects, trips and financial assistance. Known historically for its cookie sales and female leadership, the Girl Scouts organization dates back to 1912, according to a press release.

Locally, the Arizona Cactus-Pine Council has grown since 1936 and serves 11,000 girls grades K-12 in more than 90 communities across central and northern Arizona. As Arizona Girl Scouts set out on their cookie sale endeavors, the Independent is highlighting scouts across the Valley.

Read below to learn more about the Girl Scouts selling cookies in your neighborhood.

Name: Maya Hamer

Troop Number: 2256

Girl Scout Level: Cadette

Tell us about you favorite badge, and what you did to earn it? My favorite badge is one that I received while on a walkabout selling cookies at an outdoor event with many people. Someone from Council bought cookies from me, and then she surprised me with a badge for being a great, entrepreneurial cookie CEO!

What did you do with your Girl Scout proceeds last year? My troop saves our cookie earning for traveling. We are waiting for OMICRON to subside before we book any flights.

What are you goals for selling this year, and what do you plan to do with your proceeds? This year, I hope to sell at least 2,500 cookies. I am trying to expand my sales by mastering online sales to be able to reach more people. Last year, to socially distance, I tried using QR codes and handing out flyers and business cards on cars, but it didn’t lead to many sales. So, this year, I hope to send out emails with links to my store. The proceeds for sales will help fund my troop’s travels and any donations will bring cookies to soldiers.

What is your favorite memory from being a Girl Scout so far? Everytime I go out to sell, there’s always very nice people that make me so happy when I sell to them. One time while I was out selling in a public place, that shall remain my trade secret, I offered to sell cookies or take a donation to the writer and creator of Chicken Soup for the Soul series Mark Victor Hansen.

He and his wife were so supportive and impressed. He donated to the organization and told me that I will be very successful in business. He was very inspiring, and I couldn’t stop smiling. I also met Jack Selby at a different location, and he also donated a lot and was very kind. There are always very nice people while selling and it makes my day!

What is your favorite Girl Scout cookie? I’ve never been able to decide between Thin Mints, Samoas, and Lemon Ups, but I do lean towards Samoas when I must pick.
