Leavitt: Dubauskas' opinion troubling

Posted

Regarding the Nov. 10 Independent article about redistricting in Scottsdale, I find the language and implications of author Jan Dubauskas troubling.

While confirming that the AIRC includes members of both parties and an Independent, and is therefore non-partisan, she continues that Scottsdale is “under attack” by Democrats and that not returning to a Republican majority would be getting it “wrong.”

She laments the last redistricting caused “our beautiful state to slowly turn purple,” as if that were the worst thing and Arizona is no longer beautiful.

I find her use of “under attack,” “wrong,” as well as implying the state is going to ruin as it transitions, is most unfortunate. Our country suffers extreme partisanship and divisiveness, on the part of both leaders and voters.

The results are inaction, anger, threats and even violence. Arizona has more that our fair share of these dangerous politicians and plenty of supporters of their radical ideas and actions. This language and these opinions do nothing to foster communication, cooperation, or confidence in our electoral system.

Ms. Dubauskas is running for State Senate in District 23. We do not need another politician with extreme and undemocratic ideas; this woman should not be elected to office!
