Janet Napolitano to receive Experience Matters’ Change Maker Award

Former Arizona Governor, Secretary of Homeland Security and University of California President Janet Napolitano will receive the Change Maker Award at the Fourth Annual Experience Matters Luncheon.

CBS5 Anchor Sean McLaughlin will host the event and Arizona Congressman Greg Stanton will moderate a question-and-answer session following Secretary Napolitano’s keynote remarks on Friday, March 6 at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn & Spa, 5402 E. Lincoln Dr., Scottsdale.

Lattie and Elva Coor are the Honorary Chairs for the luncheon, according to a press release, detailing the Experience Matters Change Maker Award event, which begins with registration at 11 a.m., and honors an individual who made a “major impact on our community and the state of Arizona.”

“Janet Napolitano has built of legacy of change, leadership and impact, not just in Arizona, but across the nation,” said Experience Matters Executive Director Wendy Cohen in a prepared statement.

“As governor, among her most important priorities was education. Her efforts helped children succeed in school, mirroring the significant impact Experience Matters’ literacy tutoring program has had on hundreds of children in the greater metropolitan area.”

Ms. Napolitano was Arizona’s 21st governor from 2003 to 2009, before being named U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security under President Barack Obama from 2009 through 2013.

She was named president of the University of California system in September 2013 and will step down from that role in August, the release said.

Before her election as governor, Ms. Napolitano was attorney general of Arizona from 1999 to 2003 and was the first woman to serve in that office as well as Secretary of Homeland Security and University of California president, the release noted.

Born Nov. 29, 1957 in New York City, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Santa Clara University and earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.

While a partner at Phoenix law firm Lewis and Roca LLP, she served as an attorney for Anita Hill during her testimony before Congress.

In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Napolitano U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona during which time she was involved in the investigation of Oklahoma City bomber Michael Fortier of Kingman, the release said, adding that Forbes magazine ranked her as the world’s eighth most-powerful woman in 2013.

Individual tickets for the event are $175 and sponsorships are available at experiencemattersaz.org.
